A short film is any film not adequately long to be seen as a component film. Yet no understanding exists as to where that point of confinement is drawn, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences portrays a short film as "a special motion picture that has a running time of 40 minutes or less, including all credits".
The term featurette at first associated with a film longer than a short subject, yet shorter than a standard component film.
